Baselan is back again, and once again we will be running the usual along with a new game, Tekken 6!
Here’s the list of official tournaments we are running

Those are the official games we are running. All of which will most likely take place on Saturday. Due to player demand, we’ll also be hosting a 3v3 team tournament on Friday (15$ per team) as well as an SF2 Hyper Fighting tournament. 2008 VGA Review & Winners

Sigh, the 2008 VGA have come to pass. I look to it as a form of entertainment, but it was a chore to watch this year. I forced myself to watch it, on tv, because the live streams had terrible camera angles and were constantly cutting out.

I would mute the horrible pop music and the rap by 50 Cent and pay more attention to the MajorNelson IRC chat, where I would participate in the hundreds of users flaming the Video Game Awards.

I will briefly talk about the good and bad of the show as well as what won what, outlining the event.

The Good

What was good about the show? I’m actually going to have to think on this one. There are a few good moments which I can recall.

Soul Calibur IV won best fighter which it well deserved. Grand Theft Auto IV won GOTY which is deserved even though many will argue that point for Fallout 3. World of Goo won Best indie game. It is an amazing game and I highly suggest you check it out on Steam or Wii.

Jack Blacks performance was pretty good. He’s very witty on stage and that’s what I like about him. Unlike the other celebrities who are so very robotic, unenthusiastic and clearly just read from the teleprompter. Jack had some pretty epic and humorous moments. One, which was my favorite of the bunch, was near the end when they were premiering Brutal Legend (a game starring Jack Black releasing in 2009) and Jack Black was holding a Flame Thrower as Jerry Stiller is brought in on a chariot of sorts.

What else? Oh yeah, very attractive women, although they knew nothing about games.

Overall, little was good about the show, there were little tidbits that were entertaining.

The Bad

What could possible be bad about a show of such high caliber? Everything, apparently. Nearly all the premieres were short CGI teasers with almost no-ingame footage with exception of Brutal Legend, Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost & Damned, and Terminator: Salvation. None of the world premieres were outstanding, nothing mind blowing. Just more overrated and overhyped games for 2009, sigh.

The music was just absolutely horrid. Why is 50 Cent even part of an event like this? The last thing gamers want to see or hear is 50 Cent. I literally muted my television and joined a chatroom while any music was playing. My ears would have started bleeding if I didn’t. The best music was by Weezer at the end. Everything else was generic and terrible pop music or mainstream rap music. What is wrong with the music of this generation? Seriously?

There are so many aspects of this show that just made it all around bad, and there are too many for me to rant on about, But, the biggest peeve is what a sellout the industry is becoming. I’m looking your way, EA Games. Watching this show is such an eye opener of bad movie games and game gimmicks that have the most money to pump into these shows and inevitably become overhyped only to get 6/10 review and fail miserably among gamers.

What was with the Ads too? I swear Stride Gum sponsors everything now, probably even the War in Iraq. That’s probably the case since the US Army seemed to be sponsoring every single word that came out of any actor’s mouth. The advertising was everywhere. I even saw an Nvidia commercial sponsored by the Army. An ad sponsored by another ad? Gamestop ads were also everywhere.

And last, but not least, Wii Game of the Year. Can you guess what got it? Super Smash Bros. Brawl,  right? That would be the most obvious answer, but it’s not right. BoomBlox got it! What!? How does that make any sense? The only thing I can think of is that it is an EA title and I know they have nothing but money to push their terrible games.

You just can’t disagree on how terrible the show was this year, especially with the absence of Samuel L. Jackson. A game show just isn’t a game show without him. Although Jack Black did a good job, it was just everything else that was thrown down the crap chute.

I’m glad the overhyped gaming year of 2008 is coming to a close. Now I can look forward to some quality games such as Street Fighter IV, Resident Evil 5, and Mass Effect 2.

If I were to give this show a score out of 10, it would be no more than 5/10.
