Oh, hello, didn’t see you there. It’s been awhile since our last major event hosted by Chip Damage, but we are starting 2010 with a bang, adding a whole new tournament to our roster this year. March to Battle(M2B) is our first tournament of 2010 which will include some of the popular titles most of you have come to know and love, along with a few new heavy hitters.

March to Battle is Chip Damage’s first official tournament of 2010. Let’s not waste any more time on introductions and get down to the nitty gritty.
Here are the current details:

Venue: Science Lounge, Armes Building, University of Manitoba

This will probably be one of our last if not last tournament hosting Vanilla Street Fighter IV as Super Street Fighter IV will be making its debut on April 27, 2010!
Can ShinAkuma possibly lose in the last Chip Damage SF4 tourney? Find out this Saturday at MARCH TO BATTLE!!!

That’s it for now. You guys know already how it goes. Feel free to ask any questions.

Name: Mike Badejo

Alias: BMike, KillaSasa

Age: 20 (i’ll be 21 two days after Super releases. So if you’re looking for the perfect present i can always use another stick. )

nYo: What got you into fighting games?

BMike: Since I was 5, every sunday, my brother (then 18) would force me to play Super SFII (not turbo) with him for 4 hours. This went on for about 11ish years. I then moved into Smash bros (64 and melee). I got invited to a Chipdamage tourney, where i placed top 4th. I caught wind of the SF4 hype train, and the rest is history

nYo: Who’d you use in your early street fighter days?

BMike: I’m not ashamed to admit I was flowcharter in past days.

nYo: So always a fan of Ken then?

BMike: Yeah, I’ve always liked Ken. As a five year old, I think the fire was what attracted me, that, and an unhealthy addiction to mario brothers (Fireballs). Soon after getting my ken repeatedly beaten by my brother’s Ryu, my older sister, who played SSFII, Killer Instinct and Smash Bros, introduced me to the world of Guile, and I found my way to Dee Jay as well. I’ve been rotating ever since.

nYo: How would you describe your style?

BMike: At first, I started a little bit more defensively as a player in a couple games. But after getting some more experience in each game, I’ve tried to push as much offense as I can and put opponents away early. I try to capitalize on my opponents forced errors to the point that they’re scared to retaliate.

nYo: So a rushdown player then?

BMike: Yeah, definitely. I’ll even try to turn characters that aren’t well built for rushdown into an offensive juggernaut

nYo: When did you decide to make the switch to Cammy from Guile?

BMike: I started trying her in early May I believe, and made the full switch around June after getting my Guile beat by one too many Ryus. I wanted to be able to punish someone and make it count.

nYo: Why Cammy, instead of other rushdown oriented characters like say Ken or Rufus?

BMike: While I like Ken the character, a lot of people were playing him at the time, and I didn’t think I could stand out with him then. I felt that I wouldn’t be able to take him to the limit then. I’ve hated Rufus’s design since I’ve seen him and while I do think he’s a strong character in terms of properties, my personal dislike of him made sure I didn’t play him. Also, his theme music doesn’t even sniff Cammy’s. :p

nYo: Guile and Cammy and such different characters, who do you prefer between the two?

BMike: Tough question. I like them both equally. Although I’m less than thrilled with IV’s version of Guile, I still like the character a lot, and his gameplay in previous titles. HF and CvS2 for guile would be my favorite. Cammy though, is a little wrecking ball, and is a great amount of fun to play. In IV, I like playing Cammy more I’d say.

nYo: You started coming out and I’d say you were a solid player right from the start. How did you go about practicing?

BMike: Before IV dropped, I was playing a lot of HDR, so that helped. Honestly, other than that, I just kept playing people who were mostly better than me. People from this scene and others, especially those from the NeoGAF boards. Contrary to what some will tell you, online play has its uses – you can learn a lot of tiny matchup tips just by seeing things you might not normally see from your local playerbase. It sucks at first, but you gotta be ableto take your lumps against betters players too. Eventually you just feel yourself get a little better, and every now and then you turn a corner. It takes about the same time to take a character from 1 to 7 as it does 7 to 8 and 8 to 9.

nYo: You’ve slowly made fought your way up and have become one of the top players in the scene. Who are your favorite people to fight against?

BMike: I love going up against the best, so right now, my favorite player to play against is Shane. No disrespect to him at all, I feel like I can beat him. He’s unquestionably the best player in our scene though. You don’t go a year undefeated without being the best. After Shane, it would probably be Mr Jim Kim. We easily have over a thousand matches against each other, and I think we make each other bring out all the stops because we play so often.

nYo: Whats your favorite match from last year that you were involved in and to watch.

BMike: My favorite match from last year was at ComicCon, myself vs Fstrike’s Balrog. It came down to the wire, with a great ultra finish in a bad matchup for cammy. Very exciting and had the stuff that makes a tournament different from ranbats or casuals. Honorable mention to my choke against Shane at C4. My favorite to watch would probably have been team BLFM vs Team Old Men, because Old Men had never had a chink in their armour before and suffered one at last.

nYo: What do you think caused you to miss the ultra against Shane at C4?

BMike: I took my eyes off the prize. Instead of focussing on finishing the match by staying solid, I was thinking about being the first one to knock him to the losers bracket. This caused me to react improperly to his dive kick – i jumped instead of Cannon Spiked. Cooler heads prevailed in the end.

nYo: From there it seemed like you were messed up as you didn’t seem to put up a very good fight in the next round.

BMike: Nah, I was drained. Coming off a high from beating FStrike and then failing at a crucial moment made for a big crash against Ragestorm. As you can see in the video, I didn’t put much thought into my approach against as strong a player (Ragestorm)

nYo: Do you play any other figthters?

BMike: During my wait for Super, I’ve been playing a decent amount of TvC UAS, using Ken the Eagle and Viewtiful Joe. I like that its crazy like a VS game, but not as horrifying to learn as MvC2. I’d love to play some SC4 too, but my Soul Calibur 2 skills didn’t transfer very well, so I’d have to start from scratch and I just don’t have the time lol.

nYo: Just biding time till super then like most everyone else. What are you looking forward to in super?

BMike: After tonights announcement and watching some 3S videos, Ibuki. Her mixup potential looks great and seems like a perfect fit for my style. After that, Dee Jay. And finally, the subtle changes they made to my mains and alts, hoping that they got some love from Capcom. I’m also looking forward to (hopefully) Sagat and Rufus hitting every branch on their fall down the nerf tree, but that might not happen. Yes, I am salty.

nYo: Who are you favorite players to watch?

BMike: In our scene or anywhere?

nYo: First ours, then anywhere.

BMike: In our scene, I like watching Jim Kim’s Bison, Kang’s Ryu and Chadyo’s Ken. They tend to have really exciting matches with good finishes. In the world, I like watching Dagger G (the definitive SFIV Guile), Sanford Kelly (master of multiple games and characters), and of course, Daigo. The guy knows how to put on a show but show the best fundamentals in the world.

nYo: Alright that should wrap things up, anything you’d like to say to the scene?

BMike: Keep playing and keep getting better. I think we can be one of the top scenes in Canada, and who’s to say we aren’t right now? But we can only get as good as our competition, so it’s on us to keep improving. With this in mind, remember to have fun because at the end of the day, these are just games. And I’m coming for the League.

With 2010 a few weeks old I just wanted to go over a few things we’ve got planned so far for the year. We held our first ranbat yesterday and it was a big success! Tons of quality matches, some new faces and a general good time all around. Recruitment was a success in my books. We got a few more players from it and have a bit more exposure now as well.

We are planning to do more gatherings. In addition to the usual Friday sci-lounge gatherings, we’re planning to book some a room at the university to game on Saturday afternoons. We are planning to do this sometime in the next few weeks. We’ll keep things posted. This will be similar to the usual gathering but in a different location. We are also looking into using a different facility for tournaments, even though the science lounge is a fine venue for us and we’ve had a ton of good times there it’s also a venue that’s a little harder to get. Despite always getting the room its always something I worry about when we do tournaments there.

As for tournaments this year, we’ve got one upcoming in March for Shoji Con. Details for that are a bit scarce right now and we’ll keep everyone up-to-date once we get more info. There’s some pretty interesting stuff planned for that but until things are confirmed, we don’t know for sure. With Super Street Fighter IV coming out we may or may not do an official launch tournament for it, depending on its release. If it comes out in April I don’t think it would be a good idea as finals will be ongoing. Either way, we’ll have a tournament for super fairly shortly after the game comes out. Of course we’ll have the 2 Baselan tournaments. We’ve been invited to do another Comic Con event. Things are up in the air for Driven as we haven’t been contacted about it as of yet. Of course we’ll have our usual major TST sometime in August probably.

We’ve had one awesome ranbat already to start off the year! I want to see more of this for more of the games. Keep up the good work guys. 2009 was a great year lets top it in 2010!

I haven’t written one of these in a long time, and I mean a LONG time. This is due to my laziness in terms of coming up with something to write about. I’ve been trying to focus on so many things these days that I’ve forgotten about this blog or I’ve just been working on improving my game in Street Fighter IV. As of this post being posted, we’ve had our final tournament of the year (BaseLAN 18) and are now going into downtime. For some it’s just a way for them to get better at Street Fighter IV while the burnt out players take a rest. For others it’s a time to catch up on certain things in life that we haven’t done due to trying to get better in Street Fighter IV. By certain things in life I mean playing other games. I, myself, have found that I need a new fix on a game and I’ve come across a few titles to keep me busy until the new year comes around with Super Street Fighter IV.

First game that has entered my mind is Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. When I first popped this into my PS3, I wasn’t really expecting much as I had tried out the first one and was not too pleased with it. I read the instruction booklet that came with the game and found out that this was basically the video game adaptation of the Civil War story arch in the Marvel Universe. I have most of the comics that relate to this game, so the relationship between me and the game are somewhat good, or so I thought. Playing through the game, it was a beat-em-up RPG style of game. This unfortunately meant one thing, repetition. Now I’m not a big fan of most new generation beat em ups simply because they’re usually short, and they tend to be graphically unappealing, or they just make me lose interest. Now I know that all beat-em-ups are like that, but come on, Final Fight was a hard as hell game and was pretty damn long. Rarely would I make it past the Casino stage because I’d get my ass handed to me and have no lives. So getting back to Marvel Alliance 2, I felt like they had the power and stuff to make the game a little more longer and a bit more appealing. They barely incorporate all the characters that are available, I have the same team that consists of Wolverine, Spidey, Daredevil, and one extra from the start to where I’m currently am now in the game. I just wish that they’d make you change it up so that a boss can’t be beat with the same characters. I love Marvel, but I think they should just stick with making better storylines in their comics, rather than making Activision produce their licensed games.

Second game that has entered my bloodstream is DJ Hero. This game came out in October, it’s the middle of November, and I haven’t really talked about it that much. All I can say is that the mixes in this game are sick, I enjoy a majority of them (Minus Black Eyed Peas and Benny Benassi). It’s got something that I just can’t put my hand on when comparing it to other games I’ve played. When I’m spinning the turntable and listening to the songs I just feel like I’m having a good time. The controls are pretty simple, the controller it self is a one “vinyl” turntable, a cross fader, equalizer, a Euphoria button, and a PS3 control set at the top of the thing. It’s completely wireless and goes on with some batteries that need to be replaced from time to time. When I first popped this game in, I was doing a crossover between DJ Hero and Street Fighter IV due to our tournaments that we still had coming up. But after BaseLAN I was able to get my hands more dirty on this game and I’ve come to really enjoy it. Starting at Medium and working myself to Expert in some songs (I’m mostly playing on Hard), I’m pretty sure I can say that this is one of the most unique and best rhythm games that is easy to get into. At first it seems a little confusing, but you’ll learn over the course of playing the songs that the screen slows down and you’re able to just read everything that’s coming towards you. My only quarrel about this game is the controller itself, the crossfader REALLY pisses me off, especially when I have to do Fader Spikes in game. Great job though to Activision and the Guitar Hero team for releasing this game.

Thirdly doesn’t come to a big surprise, Tekken 6. We all know that 3D fighters have never been my friend. They really have the tendency to make me rage because of some of the ways that people can clutch and come back. Tekken 6, while being my favorite 3D fighter series, is also one of my most disliked games in 3D fighters as well. I really love what Namco has done with the franchise, but god damn, when I saw the netcode and how it’s working. I really wondered what was going on in their heads. They also decided that custom character stuff would not be transferable and could not be used by both players if playing offline versus mode, this is garbage. It makes me wonder if they were really ready to release the game on console or if they just wanted to get it out there so that it can have a spot in the Christmas Catalogue/Flyers. I love how many fighting games are working on bringing in new players as well with simpler systems (Street Fighter IV has shortcuts and other little things to help out casuals and newbies at the game). Tekken 6 seems to offer a lot to offer to casual gamers as well as newbies, as their training mode is one of the best in the fighting game industry. My only issue with this is that it’s become quite apparent that most 3D fighters are very masher friendly and this has been an known issue to really grind my gears (check BaseLAN T6 Results). Working hard for my combos is really something I feel like I have worked hard for, but to get knocked out of a tournament over someone who looks like they’re seizuring on the pad does not bode well for me. But while there are these things that piss me off about T6, the game is fun, learning a new character has never felt more refreshing (I played Steve Fox in T5 and T5DR, now I’m moving onto Lei Wulong). Will you see this Korean in more future Tekken events? To answer your question Keith Bailey, yes, you will.

Well I think that’s about it, I’ve caught up with most things that I wanted to talk about. Street Fighter IV has definitely been put on the shelf at this time, but I won’t stop playing it completely. I’m around so I’ll probably just play it online with some of my GTASF (Greater Toronto Area Street Fighter) guys. Locally though, don’t be surprised if you see me busting out other characters like Gouken, Fei Long, or even Ryu. I hope to see you guys around in the new year and with SSFIV coming in next year, I’m hoping the hype will be just as big again next year. Having 6 tournaments this year really helped us with getting us back on the map and getting our scene to really get up there. Without you guys I’m sure we’d have gone our separate ways a long time ago. I want to thank you on behalf of the GoC (Games on Campus) and Chipdamage for coming out to our tournaments, having fun and hanging out with us. The fight will continue next year, with the downfall of Shane’s Legacy as number 1 in the city. Thanks again everyone for a great year. Peace!

James “Korea” Kim

Well Tekken 6 has finally arrived. After getting a session with it and having a good night’s sleep, I can now give my thoughts on it.

Long story short, it’s Tekken. It’s what I expected it to be. It’s basically a new version of DR with a few tweaks. If you liked DR, this will feel familiar. If you didn’t, this won’t change your mind. You have to realize though that I’ve been watching over this game for more than 2 years now so any trivial stuff is old news to me.

As it is with Tekken, the presentation is absolute top notch. The music is cool (anger of the earth ftw) and the animations make high level videos a martial art fanboy’s wet dream. Law is the best incarnation of Bruce Lee in any fighting game and Steve is the best boxer in any fighter. The moves look really painful too. Just watch a Bryan video if you don’t believe me. It’s in no doubt a pretty game which more or less is what keeps it around.

I will never argue that Tekken’s a great game by any chance. Random juggles are stupid, bound is stupid, rage mode is stupid. It’s a fun guilty pleasure though and has a place in my fighting game heart. One plus side for the competitive players is it’s easily one of the most balanced fighters out there as you truly see everyone represented. Obviously even still, some characters are better than others and some require a ton more work but overall, you can pick the character you like the most and go to town with them without really thinking about it. The reason for this is not because Namco are some masterful artists of gameplay balance but simply that every character has devastating combos and some 50/50 mixup and everyone’s generally going for the same thing.

Upon first picking the game up, I was worried that I no longer had a feel for Tekken but the game thankfully ended up feeling fairly familiar. I was most determined to main Law, try a little Kazuya and if both failed me, I’d eventually resort back to Feng. For those who aren’t aware of our Tekken past, Feng was who I mained previously. I feel I had a very good grasp of how Feng was supposed to play and he’s still very good in this game. For whatever reason though, I always wanted to move on from him. I don’t know what it was. Although it’s true that Feng is fairly boring to watch (all of his cool looking moves are rather useless), I’ve never played for flash. Those who have seen my Ryu can vouch for that. It could’ve also been that I mained Law and Kazuya in previous Tekken fighters (not well mind you) and I wanted to represent those old days. Kind of like how I use Ryu in ST and SF4 partly because he’s who I used as a kid so I have to represent. I also liked those two characters more. Don’t get me wrong, Feng is still badass and I love the wushu style. He’s no Lei Fei though. I just had no reason to switch it up in previous games since Law was mediocre and Kazuya has a learning curve whereas I already had something going with Feng.

With a new game though and Law being revamped (both in visual and gameplay), I was really excited to try him out and thankfully, he ended up feeling right. He feels like he has far more options and better high/low mixup which were the things I felt he was lacking in DR. I’m going to have to work on his juggles, particularly his wall combos which are where he gets his most devastating damage. This is what I was worried about when picking him up because they’re supposedly tight on the execution and I’ve always felt I have some of the worst execution in our scene. I also tried a little Kazuya and he’s what’s expected to be. I won’t be maining him though because my Mishima stuff is very weak and inconsistent (ie: wavedashing and EWGF). Oh well, it feels good to finally be representing the Bruce Lee character. Now I can finally put Feng to rest. I still encourage anyone planning on picking him up to do so though and I’m more than willing to give a few pointers.

It’ll still be hard to see how well this game will be received in our scene. Tekken is a game that looks and feels VERY awkward when you first pick it up, especially if it’s before you learn any combos, mixup and most importantly, movement. It could likely turn a lot of people off from the game. It could survive though so long as everyone sees past that. I’m no longer at a point where I want to take every fighting far competitively, hence why I don’t play Blazblue and Soul Calibur as much as I initially planned to. But thankfully Tekken feels familiar and it’s still fun so we’ll see what I do with it. It would be cool too if some of the Tekken OGs here picked the game up as well (particularly to give Mishimas some representation). Yes there’s juggles and sometimes they’re bullshit but the game’s still fun and the SF OGs still have to deal with stuff like ultra combos and mashing shoryu’s in their games.

Oh well, here’s hoping for the new Tekken.
