I went down to the local Play N Trade that just opened up like a month ago for the first time today. It was a small little place that was about the size of the Kenaston EB, if not bigger. It is family owned by a Filipino family and they seemed really nice. Although I was talking to the kids and one employee. There was one older gentleman who kinda sat in the back looking all gruff, I’m assuming it is the father of the two kids there. Anyways, they came up to me asking if I played Madden. Now being a fighting game fan, I kindly told them I don’t, but I do play them fight games. The boy tells me that they are holding a Madden 2011 Tournament at their store on the 21st of August. Now this kinda perked my interest because I looked around and saw that the corner of the shop had 6 LCD screens. I asked if that’s what they were going to use for the tournament, they said that they would be playing locally against each other in 2 min. 4 quarter games. Then the winner of this local tournament would go on to face off against national winners on the 28th of August. So this got me to start telling them that I had some tournament running experience with my fellow team members and proceeded to tell them more about what we did as a group. Turns out we came to an agreement that we’d help each other out. So here I am plugging in their Madden 2011 Tournament on our site.

TST 5, what does it stand for? It stands for "That Summer Tournament", the 5th one in the time we've been operating the scene in Winnipeg. This year is going to be one of the biggest tournaments that Winnipeg will see, with games such as Super Street Fighter IV, Tekken 6, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, BlazBlue: Continuum Shift. With returns of old games like Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Capcom vs. SNK 2 (Really??!!). We're also gonna feature a 2v2 Super Street Fighter IV teams tournament.

Word on the street was that Saskatchewan was coming down to invade and potentially take our money away from us. Although, will Shane (ShinAkuma204) or BMike (KillaSasa/KillaBMike) allow this to take place? Will Graeme Howard (TheTimelyHoward) put a roadblock to those coming from the west? Will James Kim (Korea) take money from Saskatoon's supposed best player? This and a province vs. province 5v5 will take place at TST5!

Now there is also word of some Money Matches happening at TST5. One being the big grudge match between James Kim and Graeme Howard. They will feature a first to 7 match for $50, thus taking the title for Biggest Money Match in Chipdamage history. Another will be BMike taking challengers in old school games such as Killer Instinct and Fighter's Destiny for the SNES and Nintendo 64, respectively. This will be one hell of an event.

Before they went off to compete the worlds biggest Fighting game tournament I asked the evo goers a few questions. Unfortunatly not everyone answered but here are the ones who did

What games are you planning to enter? (Official or not)

Fstrike: SSF4

Pak-man: I only intend to enter Super Street Fighter 4 officially. Should a side tourney grab my attention, I’ll give it a shot.

Korea: Super SFIV, TvC

Shinakuma: SSF4. That’s it.

JayseR: Super Street Fighter IV. Pretty much the only fighting game I play. I’m a one game sorta guy. Gonna be mad hype!

Kang: SSFIV, T6, HDR. Focusing mostly on Super. I only entered T6 for the heck of it and haven’t been practicing it. HDR because it’s ST. If CigarBoB is doing an ST tournament, I’ll see about entering it.

Whats your goal at evo?

Fstrike: Get out of pools

Pak-man: Top 8…Just kidding. I would at least like to make it out of my pool, but barring that, I just want to learn more about my game and improve from there.

Korea: Realistically, not go 2-0, which I achieved last year, but I really want to at least make it out of a pool, and possibly make more social connections.

Shinakuma: The goal, as with any tourney I enter, is to win. However if that can’t be achieved I would like to place in the top 8 at least.

JayseR: I have no real goal, I’ll attempt to get as far as I can, I’ll MESS UP ARTURO! I’m there to enjoy the atmosphere and hang out with friends before my voyage to the east coast! I’ll do some filming, play some real deece games, show Mike Ross up! Yeah that’s right! Although not playing in the last two weeks really hurts. It doesn’t matter, cuz I’m sailing on a boat!

Kang: To see how far I get and soak up all the hype. Just like last year only more.

What are you looking forward to most?

Fstrike: playing MvC3 Build

Pak-man: Honestly, I’m mostly looking forward to hanging out with the amazing group of local guys we have going this year. Also enjoying the sights and sounds of Vegas!!

Korea: At Evo? The hype, the faces I get to meet up with that I haven’t seen in a while. All the Bison players as well as the other opponents I faced. In Vegas? Spending time with some good friends and my girlfriend mostly and hanging out in a place that isn’t Winnipeg!

Shinakuma: Getting back on the horse that I fell of off last year with my underachievement in SF4.

JayseR: The hookers!? Uh… the atmosphere and chilling with friends! Meeting some new people perhaps. I look forward to the MAD HYPE CHEA BEA!

Kang: As a player, I’m looking forward to my performance in Super and also trying out MVC3. As a spectator, just seeing how everybody performs against each other and also seeing my fellow Winnipeggers go at it.

What else are you looking forward to?

Fstrike: Bang the Machine, meeting the pros, meeting other players from the different scenes, Money Matches

Pak-man:Bang the Machine being shown on Saturday will be awesome! Meeting the “pro” players I’ve come to idolize…Marn, Ricky O, Tatsujinken, Bebop…seeing Daigo in the flesh.

Korea: Look at my previous answer

Shinakuma: I’m there for a week this time so I can check out some actual Vegas activities.

JayseR: Meeting anyone who can stand up to the fury of the White Ranger! WHITE RANGER PSYCHO POWER!
Mad clubbing, mad daice, moar deece, even moar doice!

Kang: I heard Bang The Machine will be played this year. It may be ancient now but I’ve waited 5 years to see it. I also want to make up for the lack of “Vegas” stuff that I did last year.

How did you go about preparing?

Fstrike: Mostly looking into my game and seeing what holes need to be filled work on execution and reaction offline, play some online but not for too long, research matchups

Pak-man: I played alot of ssf4 online, took it more seriously than I ever have before, training mode to get links and combos down… etc. Studying match ups on the forums.

Korea: Practicing my execution, while mindgames are something I should be practicing more, I found that my execution was off after playing Bison a bit. So I decided to go back and practice that. I have general information as to how to fight certain characters, but not the full picture of all 35 match ups. I look forward to seeing how my practice goes.

Shinakuma: I created a training team to help get some offline play and testing in.

JayseR: Well, let’s see:
Step 1: Troll irc and forums saying I’m going to EVO!
Step 2: Troll irc and forums moar saying I can’t go due to money.
Step 3: Book a flight the day before flying out to Vegas!
Step 4: Troll irc and forums even moar saying I’m going and I’ll be there before everybody else!
Step 5: Pack everything in 2 hours, don’t sleep, and take massive adrenaline shots straight to the heart!
Step 6: Profit?!?!?

Kang: Well I’ve been sick with laryngitis these past two weeks (I’ll be going to Evo mostly as a mute) so I’ve been doing what I can. I’ve gone to most if not all the HTC gatherings and tried playing as much as possible in my free time just to maintain solid play and keep the blood flowing.

Who are you hoping to face in tournament while you’re there?

Fstrike: Daigo, Jwong, or one of the Japanese players to see how I stack up

Pak-man: Honestly any of the bigger names in the community would be a great experience in my book.

Korea: Anyone really, I like all types of opponents, I just hope that I don’t get too stomped that they won’t wanna talk to me. Someone like Ed Ma or something would probably just scoff and walk away instead of help someone out. At least that’s the tone I got from him last year.

Shinakuma: The only opponent I wish to face is whoever is also in the grand finals. Smiley

JayseR: Mike Ross, Floe, Daigo obviously, JWong, Marn(So I can shut his mouth once and for all). Uh… a billion others but I’m too tired to think and I leave to the airport in 3 hours.

Kang: Well Daigo’s in my pool so obviously I would hope to face him just for that experience. John Choi as well if he’s really in my pool. Choi seems like one of those players where you really need to play him just to see how good he is.

Good luck guys. Have a safe trip there and bring down the house. We’ll be cheering you guys from here.

This (Jul. 6 2010) morning we found out what pools we were in for the tournament. We pretty much have at least 2 other Canadians or another person from the city in our pools, as well as some very heavy hitters. For example, Tyler is in pool A, he has Daigo, John Choi, Mr. Wiz, LPN, UTJ, Keno, DS, Bustabust, Magus1234. I’m in Pool G with Norman and Jozhear, along with Juicebox Abel, Flash Metroid, Dr. Chaos, and Fubarduck. So as you can see we’re in for a big surprise. This year as well, they are bigger brackets in 32 pools, and they’re going straight for the top 64 for Saturday, as they are only picking out 2 people from each pool.

I want everyone to know that no matter what, try your best, and don’t fear the match ups you hate the most. From this tournament you can learn quite a bit. Now I’m gonna check my luggage again and make sure that I have everything that I need. Then I head off to bed and I’ll meet up with the rest of the guys on the trip. Best of luck to you guys, and to the guys staying here, maybe you’ll see us on the stream!

LET’S GO ENJOY SOME LAS FUCKING VEGAS!

Hygiene

- Toothbrush
- Tooth Paste
- Floss if you really want
- Deodorant or anti persperant

- Soap and Shampoo are provided in little bottles at the hotel.

Evo Tournament

One week, that's all that is left. Do what you have to do before you leave! Don't forget to grab your US cash, Passports, whatever you need to get across that border of ours.

With only 7 days left, who couldn't be hyped?

So here's some things you should know about the airports and stuff. Most of this is common sense, especially if you've gone on trips before.

1. Make sure you are at the airport early. Like an hour and a half is probably the minimum you wanna be there. Especially if you're going to the USA. Obvious reason for that is due to customs and security. We don't want you to miss your flight or be held up and crap. That would be uber crappy

With only 7 days left, who couldn’t be hyped?

So here’s some things you should know about the airports and stuff. Most of this is common sense, especially if you’ve gone on trips before.

1. Make sure you are at the airport early. Like an hour and a half is probably the minimum you wanna be there. Especially if you’re going to the USA. Obvious reason for that is due to customs and security. We don’t want you to miss your flight or be held up and crap. That would be uber crappy.

2. We’ll most likely be tagged due to our electronic equipment in our carry-ons. So be prepared to explain what your TE stick is and where you are going with it. Most people will know what a Street Fighter IV tournament is as most people in this world know what Street Fighter is.

3. Pack some emergency clothing in your carry on. You will need this if our luggage gets lost somewhere in the US. I honestly don’t think you want to buy a whole new wardrobe in Vegas. Although with the outlet malls, you can probably get a whole closet of stuff for $1000 or something.

4. Keep most big electronics in your checked baggage. I know that most people will say “But it might get lost” and “I had no problems taking it with me on my carry on”, but it’s just better to have it in your checked luggage, simply because they may deny it as a carry on due to it’s weight and you may not have another bag you can put it in.

5. Have your valid passport, itinerary, boarding pass on you, always in the airport, and don’t place it in a different place. Always stick it in the same place so that you don’t scare yourself into thinking you’ve lost it in the big airport (like me last year).

HOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!

One more week boys (and girl)!

So welcome back to the "x amount of Days Left Til Vegas" miniseries of posts. Last time I told you what to expect from Evolution, the tournament, now this time I'll tell you about Vegas, as it's quite a city. While this trip is mostly for Evo, sometimes we just gotta get out of the city and relax a little, gamble a bit, shop til we drop, and eat until we can't eat anymore. So some things to look out for in Vegas.

1. The Atmosphere - Day or Night, the strip is crazy packed (except in the very morning since people are hung over and such). It's the desert, it's fucking dry heat that's going to hit your skin. While this is something you're usually not hyped about

So welcome back to the “x amount of Days Left Til Vegas” miniseries of posts. Last time I told you what to expect from Evolution, the tournament, now this time I’ll tell you about Vegas, as it’s quite a city. While this trip is mostly for Evo, sometimes we just gotta get out of the city and relax a little, gamble a bit, shop til we drop, and eat until we can’t eat anymore. So some things to look out for in Vegas.

1. The Atmosphere – Day or Night, the strip is crazy packed (except in the very morning since people are hung over and such). It’s the desert, it’s fucking dry heat that’s going to hit your skin. While this is something you’re usually not hyped about. It feels different from little ol’ Winnipeg. Always pack some water with you (bring a water bottle with you for the trip). Bring some good walking shoes, as most of the time you’ll be walking about, and it’s not cool wearing things like flats or even sandals. Oh, and grab a porn flier for a souvenir if you want, if not, just don’t bother looking at the people handing them out.

2. Casinos – These are exactly what you see in movies like Ocean’s 11. Jam packed full of people, noises everywhere. Make sure you know where the exits are and where the elevators are to get back to the room! Gamble here for a while and you’ll be able to see some Evo top players at some of the tables. Free drinks are usually here, but they expect a decent tip. Most of the casinos have a buffet in there. Buffets that I plan on hitting this trip, the Rio again, Belagio, and perhaps the Wynn.

3. Food other than Buffets – Welcome to America, land of the obese and free. Seriously, so many things down there we don’t up here. Hit up a Walgreens or 7-11 to check out the drink selection and chips. Try out fast foods that we don’t get here. IHOP IHOP IHOP. LET’S DO IT UP!

4. Shopping – Nothing to really say here but that they have some awesome outlet stores. Adidas, Puma, Ecko, Zoo York hopefully. Bring cash and be ready for a kinda long bus ride (crowded too).

Well that’s all I’ll cover in this short series of blog posts. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HYPE HYPE HYPE!

I honestly don't think I have ever seen everyone so excited about something. Not even the announcements of the new characters and Super Street Fighter IV brought this much excitement/hype. If you want to know what to expect from Evo, well I can give you a few things.

1. Madness - This is the one thing that you'll be hit by when you first enter the room during pools/semis/finals. It is just awesome up close and live. When you come back to Winnipeg, you'll just be like, nothing compares to the hype and excitement as it was at Evo.

2. Lack of sleep – You’ll be feeling this the whole time probably, especially if you’re going to be chilling with other crews that you’ve met online. I think we had like a 3am gaming session last year. It was great meeting new people and stuff, hopefully we’ll meet more this year.

3. Demos – Marvel vs. Capcom 3, last year it was TvC, Tekken 6, MvC2 for the new generation consoles. Those can’t compare to this one. Expect long line ups for it though, and be respectable and give the controller up when you lose.

9 DAYS LEFT, GET HYPE!!!!

Let’s see if I can do 9 days of blogs!
