(FAQ) Frequently Asked Questions
Who are you and what do you do?
We are the Science Students Gamers Association (SSGA), now Chip Damage. We’re a small gaming group located at the University of Manitoba specializing in mainly fighting game tournaments. We host tournaments for several fighting games every few months.
During the summer, we run our largest tournament event for the year in August called That Summer Tournament (TST).
What games do you usually play?
Currently, the games that receive the largest amount of entries and the highest level of players are Street Fighter 3: Third Strike and Super Smash Bros Melee. However, we also have audiences for other fighting games such as Tekken, Guilty Gear, King of Fighters, other fighting games by Capcom, etc. If there’s a fighting game you like, chances are, someone else here knows about it and plays it as well. And you can bet we’re excited about Street Fighter IV.
Do I have to be a University student to go?
Nope. SSGA/Chip Damage events are open to the public. You do not have to be a University student nor is there any sort of membership system that you need to sign up for.
I’d like to play but I’m not very good.
No problem! SSGA/Chip Damage welcomes players of all skill levels. You can be sure to find somebody here who is at your level no matter how high or low. Also, if you’re willing to learn, we’re always willing to teach.
Do you guys play anything else other than fighting games?
While there are certainly players who come that enjoy many other types of games, we prefer to avoid hosting events for game genres that already have their own established communities in Winnipeg. If console shooters like Halo and Call of Duty are more your thing, we recommend you check out the guys at All Your Base Online.
Isn’t there already another UofM gamer’s group?
That would be the UMGA. The SSGA and UMGA are two different gamer groups located at the University of Manitoba. Sorry for any confusion.
When’s your next event?
Check the Upcoming Events forum for info and updates on the next event.
We often have house gatherings and such on the weekends. If something is going on or if you want to do something yourself, feel free to post in the Gatherings thread.
We’re also preparing for our large event called That Summer Tournament III on August 16th-17th.
More info on the upcoming events can be found here.
I’ve never been to campus before and I’m not sure where to go
An online map of the UofM can be found here:
You can also grab yourself a campus map at the info booth when you head down to the University.
Who do I contact if I want more info?
The staff members of the SSGA/Chip Damage are:
James Kim (Korea)
Matthew Lehotsky
Duong Phu (nYo)
Tyler Sanderson (Kang)
Jayse Meyer (JayseR)
If you’re an SSBM player and want info particularly on that game, your best bet would be to contact Duong as mentioned above.
